RAP Teacher Registration: What Needs to be in Place

Quicklinks: Read Around the Planet website and CAPspace login.

Teacher registration for Read Around the Planet has been pushed back to December 10. Sorry for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience. In the meantime, double check these lists!

If your teachers are registering themselves

If you are registering for your teachers

  • The videoconference equipment needs to be entered, tech contacts added, and verified.
  • You should have a list of your registrations with:
  • A note on matching: The system will make sure that only one videoconference is scheduled for each endpoint. You will have a better chance of not ending up in the “leftover” pile if you select all the times you can actually do and let the computer matching program pick your actual time. This is especially true for those buildings who schedule a session every hour for the full event.

Once you have these steps done, then you’re ready for teacher registration as soon as it opens! Thanks for your patience!

My question regarding the paragraph below is: How do I add my teachers that don’t have accounts to “My People”? All I am able to do is search, not add.

The teachers need to be “attached” to the verified equipment they will use for RAP. Coordinators, go to Admin, My Equipment, click the endpoint’s name, click “Attach End Users”. (This pulls a list of names from “My People”, so if they aren’t listed under “My People”, you’ll need to add them there first.)

Helen – the teachers who don’t have accounts won’t be under My People. You won’t “attach them” either. You’ll just fill out a match request form – in your name – and add the teachers’ name email & phone, pick their times and be done. They won’t be “in the system” per se like those who have accounts. I think it’ll be clearer to you when registration opens. In the meantime, don’t worry at all about the teachers who will participate who aren’t “in the system”.

    Does that help?

Hello! I have been an annual participant in this program for a number of years as a librarian. Now I have a fourth grade classroom…and we look forward to participating this year! Double checking – cannot sign up before Dec. 10 ? Patty Meador

Patty – you can’t sign up for your time(s) before Dec. 10, but you can get your account set up, the equipment verified etc. Or is someone doing that for you?

I have a question – We have only one portable video conference unit. I drive it around the county to five different school districts for use on projects like RAP. When I start to put teacher’s available times and dates in the system, how do I prevent the matches from occuring too close together? I can drive fast, but some of my districts are 45 minutes away from each other and I need to make sure connections times don’t overlap too closely. Thanks – Kathy

Kathy – you probably will need to set up your schedule ahead of time and only pick one time for each teacher. There are a few others in this situation, and I think the best way to deal with it is control it yourself by asking for only one time.

Hope that helps! We don’t want you to have to speed! :)

I am a teacher signing up to do this on my own. Is that possible? I have a Web Cam, LCD as well as Laptop. I have been trying to register my equipment though and can not since I am not the “tech” person? Any advice would be appreciated.

I am feeling so dense. I can not figure this out. I do not see the button that says “Attach End Users.” Can I register more than one person under my name? If I have campuse techs register – can they register more than one person on their staff? So confused…

I’m also feeling dense. I don’t see the button that says “Attach End Users” either. I am the tech coordinator and have several teachers I want to register. Also, I added my equipment and was verified already. I do have several vcon cameras with different IPs that will be used for this event. If I add them to my equipment, does each one have to be verified? I was told they didn’t when I did my test connect, but I thought I should add them since they all have different IP numbers.
    Help!
    Thanks.

Amy & Jill, The “Attach End Users” wasn’t there! So it wasn’t you. But it is there now. So try again.

Jill, yes, you should add all the units that will be used. Your verifier may not actually physically test them all, but they all need to be checked off & verified. The equipment lays the foundation for matching (if you have only one unit entered there will be limits to how many VCs can be scheduled on it), and it also gives the connection information to your partner school after you’re matched. So please enter them all, then your verifier can check them off. Thanks!!

Cathy, you need H.323 or H.320 videoconferencing to participate in this project. I’m not sure that your webcam will work. I’m sorry!

Hang in there, everyone! We’re going to make it!

Janine, is there no way for me to register my equipment and try the web cam then? We have a distance learning room in our High School which is attached to my building (since we are such a small district).

  12. 12 Janine Lim December 14, 2007 at 9:57 am

Cathy – if you have H.323 software for your webcam, you could. Otherwise you’ll need to use your high school distance learning room.

I would like to have my class participate in the Read Across the Planet Project. Please pair me with a 2nd grade class in Canada. Thanks!

    Hi Susan,

Sorry, the registration closed yesterday. We also don’t take special requests. Because the project is so large, the computer matches you randomly. If you want a partner in Canada, you can use the listservs to find a partner.
